SeaWolves Capture First Win of 2016 Season

RUTLAND, Vermont— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Men's Soccer team defeated Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) opponent College of St. Joseph (CSJ) 3-1 in an away match on Sunday, August 28.

It took 14 minutes for the SeaWolves to log their first goal of the 2016 season when sophomore Bronson Kieltyka(Monmouth, Maine) connected on a volley from first-year Jeremy Miller (Bangor, Maine) to put SMCC on top 1-0.  CSJ evened the score at the 26-minute mark when senior forward Dominick Simpson (San Bernardino, Calif.) beat the keeper for his first cap of the season.

The score remained even until first-year Tristan Campbell (Parsonsfield, Maine) delivered what would be the game winning goal, assisted by Gradi Lapika (Kinshasa, Congo), to put SMCC back on top. Seven minutes later, the SeaWolves extended their lead when sophomore Douglas Cloutier (Berwick, Maine) served a free kick into the box. Sophomore Jamal Durrani (Lebanon, Maine) flashed to the near post and skipped a header by the goal keeper to give SMCC a 3-1 advantage.

Sophomore Patrick Duddy (Sedgwick, Maine) played a solid 90 minutes in the goal mouth, making seven saves on eight shots-on-goal.

The men's soccer coaching staff named both Campbell and Duddy as Men of the Match. About his selections, Coach Dougher said, "Tristan made a splash in his first collegiate match complete with a goal and Patrick stepped up for the team, learning a new position, and performing like he's always played there."

The SeaWolves will continue conference play when they host the Knights of Vermont Technical College on Monday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wainwright Field.
