CSJ MEN’S SOCCER FACES SECOND LOSS OF THE SEASON

CSJ MEN’S SOCCER FACES SECOND LOSS OF THE SEASON

BENNINGTON, Vermont (College of St. Joseph) -- The College of St. Joseph men's soccer team played hard but did not have enough to get over the hump, losing to Southern Vermont College 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Everett Field.

The Fighting Saints were the more aggressive team throughout the game and had many chances to score. In fact, CSJ outshot the SVC Mountaineers 24 to 12 but the shots were simply not finding the back of the net.

CSJ junior Sergio Lopes was the first player to have great opportunity denied and it happened within the first 10 minutes of play. He fired a curling shot from about 35 yards out, putting it high on the frame, but SVC freshman goalkeeper Chris Jiminez was there to make a diving stop.

The Mountaineers' goals were both scored by junior Paddy McGovern, each coming in the early minutes of the second half. The two-goal lead proved to be too much for the Saints to come back from, as they were only able to get one goal from sophomore Amani Francois off a free shot from 18 feet out in the 64th minute.

The Saints controlled the tempo for the majority of the game and gave themselves many chances to score. They fought hard until the very end but SVC's conservative play and lack of mistakes made it difficult for the Saints to gain any advantage. In the end, there are many things for CSJ to build on from this hard fought loss, and they will still be fighting to earn their first win of the season.

CSJ will be looking to get that elusive first win when they host Dean College Saturday, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m.
