Vermont Tech men fall to Lyndon

LYNDON, Vermont (Vermont Tech) -- The Vermont Technical College Men's Soccer team took a 8-0 drubbing Wednesday afternoon at Lyndon State. The Knights fall to 1-2-0 on the season, and Hornets are off to a 1-0-0. 

Scoring started just five minutes in when the VTC goalie slipped on the wet field and the ball trickled in. Lyndon showed quickly that they were unquestionably the stronger team, putting in another three goals in the first half and four more in the second. The Knights struggled defensively to contain the Hornet's smart, deliberate ball movement, and offensively were shut down quickly, often before reaching the Hornet's back line led by Senior Dylan Jacobs of Braintree. 

With just fifteen minutes remaining and with Junior Captain Dave Mattern (South Royalton) sliding back to provide more defensive leadership, the Knights seemed to figure out Lyndon's tactics and stall their assault. The Hornets scored no more, and the Knights created several scoring opportunities of their own that had eluded them earlier. 

"Hats off to Lyndon and [Lyndon] Coach Carey" said VTC Coach Matt Murawski. "Their individual skills were excellent, but more importantly, they moved the ball beautifully as a team. We'll learn from it, and we'll be a better team when we return to matchups against schools in our small college conference."

On Friday at home at 4:00 VTC will take on the University of Maine - Fort Kent, the two-time defending national champions of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, a national organization for athletic programs of mostly small colleges, community colleges, and junior colleges. The Knights will travel Sunday to South Portland, Maine where they'll face Southern Maine Community College in the first conference game of the season.
