SeaWolves Grab First Win Upon Dougher’s Return

SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team earned its first win of the season in a 13-goal performance against Hampshire College on Saturday, Sept. 23. Head Coach Brian Dougher, away in relief efforts of Hurricane Irma, returned to the sidelines after a two-week absence.

The SeaWolves dug themselves another 1-0 hole to begin the match on a bar-down goal by Hampshire's Ethan Haunt; by the 17^th minute SMCC had equalized and then went ahead for the first time in 2017 on a goal by senior Senai Yenie (Portland, Maine)—the team's newest addition.

SMCC remained in the driver's seat posting three more goals before the half and scoring another eight in the later 45 minutes to cap a 13-1 victory. 10 different SeaWolves contributed in the scoring effort headed by Yenie with three in his first collegiate match. Sophomores Kolin Wyman (Bridgton, Maine) and Kervens Antoine (Freeport, Maine) both netted two—Antoine created with two assists from the wing midfield position.

SMCC goalkeeper Patrick Duddy (Sedgwick, Maine) faced three shots, recording two saves. SMCC improves to 1-4 in conference play, 1-5 overall. Hampshire has played to a 0-3 record.

In a post-game interview, Coach Dougher reflected, "This was a confidence win—we need to get back on track with three conference games remaining. Offensively, we've been stagnant but today we found ways to get crafty in the attacking third and put the ball in the back of the net."

The SeaWolves will travel to Bowdoin College to take on the junior varsity team in an exhibition game on Monday, Sept. 25. SMCC is winless in its previous two meetings against the Polar Bears. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
