Yeni, Overtime Hero In Season Finale

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team finished 2017 on a high note, a 2-1 double-overtime win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Averaging less than a goal per game, UMPI exceeded this total inside 23 minutes on a free kick that beat the SMCC wall and a valiant effort from junior goalkeeper Patrick Duddy (Sedgewick, Maine). With time running away in the second half, the SeaWolves gained new life when sophomore Ryan Forkey (Derry, N.H.) came up with his first goal of the season at 81:44.

It was until the second overtime period that SMCC would strike with its second golden goal of the season; this time it was senior Senai Yeni (Portland, Maine) that would send the SeaWolves celebrating with his fifth of the fall.

Duddy notched five saves as the SeaWolves outshot their opposition 26-14.

SMCC wraps its season on a two-game win streak and 4-7-2 overall, 3-4-1 in conference action. UMPI stands 4-11 with one game remaining at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Brian Dougher reflected, "This was an exciting way to close out our season. Getting a result in the final two games was the goal we set out for last week, something this team hadn't done all season. I'm proud of the way the boys played and picked up our seniors."
