SeaWolves’ Bats Come Alive In Convincing Win Over Delhi

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team defeated the Broncos from SUNY Delhi 12-5 in five innings at the Graves Athletic Field on Wednesday, April 12.

First-year Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) made the start in the circle for the Lady SeaWolves in rainy and less than ideal conditions. The right-hander tossed five-innings and allowed five runs against a Bronco team that has hit .271 from the plate this season.

Delhi jumped on the scoreboard in the first frame by way of a bases loaded walk, but SMCC answered in the bottom of the inning courtesy of an RBI-single from first-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine).

First-years Chloe Hallowell (Pemaquid, Maine) and Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine) delivered RBI knocks to extend the SMCC lead by three runs in the second inning and then blew it open in the third scoring eight runs on five hits—the team's biggest inning of the season.

SUNY Delhi would get three more back in the top-half of the fourth on consecutive two-out hits but were held scoreless in the fifth. As the field took on water, the game was called due to unplayable conditions and the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled.

Guimond pitched a complete game on her way to her third win of the season; Delhi's Jenna Lutz was taxed with the loss allowing eight earned runs.

Burns had herself an afternoon going 3-3 from the dish with three RBI's and two runs scored. Abdul leads the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) with a .765 batting average and 16 RBI's.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Ray Magnant commented, "I thought our team did a great job handling the weather conditions and flat out came to play! I was pleased with how we manufactured runs and cut down our mistakes on defense."

SMCC improves to 3-2 overall; SUNY Delhi falls to 2-7.

The Lady SeaWolves will begin their nine-game road slate and open up conference play with doubleheaders at the College of St. Joseph (VT) on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15.
