Lady SeaWolves Split To Begin Conference Play

RUTLAND, Vt.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split with the Fighting Saints of the College of St. Joseph (CSJ) in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader on Friday, April 14.
Game 1: L, 7-6 (Eight Innings)
First-year Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) made her fifth start of the season for the Lady SeaWolves allowing three earned runs and striking out 11 over 7.2 innings of work.
SMCC posted five runs in the first frame when Guimond helped her cause bringing around three runs on a bases loaded single.
The Fighting Saints chipped away at their deficit scoring one in the third inning, three in the fifth, and then evened the score when Shelby Fenton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that forced in a run.
In extra innings both teams started with a runner on second base. SMCC was able to push that runner across in the eighth, but CSJ did that and more in the bottom-half of the inning to come away with the walk-off victory.
CSJ's Jenna Crowley earned the win; Guimond was taxed with her second loss of the season.
Errors in the field proved costly for the Lady SeaWolves as they committed five to allow four unearned runs.
Game 2: W, 10-7
First-year Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) earned the start for SMCC and went the distance to notch her first victory of the season. The right-hander threw seven innings and allowed six earned runs, adding five strikeouts.
CSJ took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and then tacked on three more in the fourth before first-year Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.) delivered a base knock with the bases loaded to bring it within one.
The Lady SeaWolves did their damage in the top-half of the sixth inning scoring seven runs, six with two-outs to take a commanding 10-4 lead. At this point the game was postponed until the following day due to darkness. The Fighting Saints would score three when play resumed in the sixth, but Mackenzie closed the door in the seventh as SMCC hung on to win 10-7.
Sophomore Elle Burbank (Bethel, Maine) recorded three hits in the game.
SMCC begins conference play at 1-1 and stands 4-2 overall. CSJ also sports a 1-1 YSCC record and improves to 1-7 overall.
The SeaWolves and the Saints will do it again on Saturday, April 15 with two more YSCC games at 12 and 2 p.m.
