SMCC Picks Up Two More Wins In YSCC Showdown

RUTLAND, Vt.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team swept Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC)-opponent College of St. Joseph (CSJ) in an afternoon doubleheader on Saturday, April 14.

Game 1: W, 7-6

Box Score

Head Coach Ray Magnant turned to first-year Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) in the first game of the double dip. Mackenzie tossed 5.1 innings and allowed five runs, four earned before first-year Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) came on in relief to notch her first save of the season.

First-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) got things going for SMCC in the first inning and added to her conference-leading RBI total (21) by drawing a bases loaded walk to score Mackenzie.

Abdul would deliver another RBI with a base knock in the third. With two outs later in the inning, Guimond doubled and first-year Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.) offered some run support launching her first career home run.

The Fighting Saints got two back on two-out hitting, but the Lady SeaWolves answered one better in the top-half of the fourth posting three more runs.

CSJ homered twice in the sixth inning and then pushed another across in the seventh to close its deficit to one. With two outs and the tying runner at second base, Guimond grabbed a pop-up to end the game.

The Lady SeaWolves recorded 10 hits and 10 walks in the contest. Mackenzie earned her second win of the season as CSJ's Jenna Crowley was taxed with the loss.

Game 2: W, 8-4

Box Score

Guimond was masterful in her sixth start of the season when she allowed just two earned runs on her way to her fourth complete game of the year. Her counterpart, Shelby Fenton made her fifth start of the season.

This time it was CSJ who jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage. The Lady SeaWolves rose to the occasion in the top-half of the second inning scoring four runs, all with two outs. Sophomore Samantha Rioux (Lewiston, Maine) extended the lead in the third inning with a RBI-single to drive in Philibotte.

SMCC added one run at a time in each of the last three innings to build a comfortable four-run lead. Guimond took care of business in the seventh to earn her fourth victory of the year.

Sophomore Elle Burbank (Bethel, Maine) went 3-4 from the dish and scored two runs in the contest.

In a post-game interview, Coach Magnant reflected, "The team battled this weekend against a very talented St. Joe's squad. I'm very pleased with how we gelled as a team and put together every phase of the game."

Sporting a team batting average of .347 and an on-base percentage of .418, the Lady SeaWolves improve to 3-1 in conference play and 6-3 overall. CSJ owns an YSCC record of 1-3, 1-9 overall.

The action continues when SMCC travels to Massasoit Community College on Monday, April 17 to take on the 2-4 Warriors in a non-conference doubleheader.
