Softball Makes It Seven Straight

CONCORD, N.H.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team extended its winning streak to seven in a row with two more Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) wins over the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) on Saturday, April 22.

Game 1: W, 5-3

Box Score

Head Coach Ray Magnant gave the ball to first-year Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) in the first of the two-game series. In making her eighth start of the season, the right-hander tossed her sixth complete game on her way to her conference-leading sixth win of the season. Guimond allowed just six hits and no earned runs to whittle her ERA to 3.70.

SMCC did all of its damage in the second and third innings featuring RBI's from first-years Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine), Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) and Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.).

The Lynx pushed three across in the bottom-half of the fifth, but that was all they would get against Guimond who retired six of the last seven batters she faced.

The Lady SeaWolves collected eight hits as a team, two coming off the bat of Philibotte.

NHTI's Brianna Whitcomb was taxed with her fifth loss of the season.

Game 2: W, 14-1 (six innings)

Box Score

First-year Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) made the start in the circle for the Lady SeaWolves and was dominant allowing one earned run over six hits.

The Lady SeaWolves posted four runs in their first at-bats and showed no signs of slowing down. SMCC cut it short going up by 14 runs in the top-half of the sixth inning.

Burns recorded three hits and scored three runs as sophomore Elle Burbank (Bethel, Maine) was also effective from the plate adding three RBI's and three runs scored.

Mackenzie cruised to her fourth win of the season as her counterpart Whitcomb suffered her second loss of the day.

In a post-game interview Coach Magnant commented, "Sarah and Kristen have proven they can keep us in games and when we provide this level of run support, it's a recipe for success. It's always a job well done to come away with two conference victories on the road."

SMCC sits atop the YSCC standings with a 5-1 in conference record, and 10-3 overall.

On deck for the Lady SeaWolves is the 10-10 Bulldogs of Dean College. The non-conference doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m. in South Portland. LIVE STATS available HERE.
