Softball Splits In Dean Matinee

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split with the Bulldogs of Dean College, a team ranked eighth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Week 3 Coaches' Poll, in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 23.

Game 1: W, 10-6

Box Score

The ever-dependable first-year Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) started in the circle for the Lady SeaWolves in the first of the two-game series. Guimond pitched seven complete innings, her seventh complete game, and notched 10 strikeouts to become the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) leader with 59 on the season.

For the seventh time this season the Lady SeaWolves posted a double-digit run total scoring in each of the first three innings and then again in the fifth.

First-year Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) collected four hits, four RBI's, and three runs in the contest. First-years Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine) and Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) also recorded multi-hit games, each with two RBI's.

Abdul smashed her conference-leading fourth home run of the season and her 14th extra-base hit of her rookie campaign to lead off the third inning to put her team up 9-1.

The Bulldogs clawed back with five runs over the last three innings of the game, but Guimond was able to stop the bleeding in time to earn her seventh win of the season. Dean's Angelina Taylor suffered the loss.

Game 2: L, 6-3

Box Score

Head Coach Ray Magnant handed the ball to first-year Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) in the second game, who went the distance tossing seven complete. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs and walked one in her sixth start of the year.

SMCC pushed one across in three consecutive innings with RBI's delivered by Abdul, Burns, and first-year Amber Randall (Standish, Maine). The Bulldogs put together a four-run fifth inning to take the 6-3 lead.

The Lady SeaWolves went down in order in the fifth and six innings, and left the bases loaded in the bottom-half of the seventh to suffer their first lost in eight games.
