Softball Wins Both On Senior Day

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team defeated the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in both games of a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 29. Before the games, Head Coach Ray Magnant celebrated three sophomores who intend to graduate in the spring—Elle Burbank (Bethel, Maine), Samantha Rioux (Lewiston, Maine), and Danielle Goodwin (South Berwick, Maine).
Game 1: W, 8-4
The Mustangs opened the scoring in their first at-bats as a result of two SMCC miscues in the field. The Lady SeaWolves answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning with RBI's by first-years Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine) and Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine).
The Lady SeaWolves pushed one across in the third and extended their lead by three in the fourth inning capped by first-year Kahli Philibotte's (Hooksett, N.H.) 17th RBI of the season.
Both teams traded two-run innings in the fifth. Guimond retired the side in order to hold the Mustangs scoreless in the final two innings to notch her conference-leading 9th win of the season.
Guimond tossed a complete seven innings and recorded 12 strikeouts, her most in a single game this season. CMCC's Olivia York was taxed with the loss.
First-year Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) collected three hits in the game to bump her average up to .323.
Game 2: W, 10-0 (five innings)
Averaging 9.5 runs per game this season, the SMCC offense kept pace posting 10 in four innings in the second game of the double dip.
First-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) went 1-2 from the dish and recorded her 43rd RBI of the team's 19-game season—leading the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) in both RBI's and batting average (.590).
Mackenzie tossed her sixth complete game on her way to her sixth win of the year. The right-hander allowed no runs and just three hits while striking out eight. The Mustangs' Haley Cuddy was tabbed with the loss.

SMCC picked up its eighth and ninth conference wins, improving to 15-4 overall. The Mustangs remain winless at 0-11 overall.
The Lady SeaWolves travel to Concord, N.H. on Saturday, May 6 to compete in the YSCC Championship Tournament. Top-seeded SMCC will match up with CMCC in the first game for the chance to play the winner of New Hampshire Technical Institute vs. College of St. Joseph (VT) in the title game.
