NHTI hosts softball round robin play

CONCORD, N.H. (SMCC) -- The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split in its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) round-robin play date on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Game 1: CSJ 9, SMCC 2 | Box Score

Head Coach Ray Magnant named sophomore Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) the starter in game one to face a loaded College of St. Joseph (CSJ) lineup. Mackenzie went 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs before first-year Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) came on for 2.2 innings of relief.

Sophomore Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine) drove in the first run for the Lady SeaWolves on a double to right field that scored Martin from second base. The Fighting Saints posted four in the bottom of the first to command a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.) tattooed a solo homerun over the left field fence that would be the last of the offense for the Lady SeaWolves. CSJ scored five runs on four hits and an error in the fourth to go ahead 9-2.

Martin recorded SMCC's only multi-hit game.

CSJ's Jenna Crowley went the distance to earn her first victory of the season.

Game 2: SMCC 6, GBCC 0 | Box Score

SMCC handed the ball to Martin in the second game, opposite her was Deanna McGuire in the circle for Great Bay Community College (GBCC).

Scoring 200 runs a season ago, SMCC came out swinging pushing three across in the first frame. The Lady SeaWolves would extend their lead in the second and again with two more in the fourth inning to notch their first win of the season.

Mackenzie made her second pitching appearance of the day to go four strong and help blank the Heron offense. Martin, a perfect 3-3 from the dish, would also be credited with the win.

SMCC opens its fall season 1-1 overall. CSJ recorded two wins on the day to sit atop the YSCC standings.

The Lady SeaWolves take the diamond again when the YSCC comes to South Portland on Saturday, Sept. 23. SMCC will take on New Hampshire Technical Institute at 10:30 a.m. and GBCC at 3:45 p.m.
