Ring’s Big Day Helps Softball To YSCC Split

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split in its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader of the season vs. the Fighting Saints from the College of St. Joseph (CSJ) on Sunday, Apr. 8.

Game 1: L, 9-5
Sophomore Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) got the nod for the Lady Wolves in the first game of the doubleheader and pitched 1.0 complete inning. The Fighting Saints scored four runs in the top-half of the second on a three-run jack to center and a fielder's choice RBI before sophomore Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) came on to finish the game.

SMCC scored in each of the first two innings on an RBI-single by sophomore Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.) and a run-scoring triple courtesy of first-year Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine).

The SeaWolves fell behind 9-3 in the top-half of the sixth, but later in the inning scored twice on consecutive bases-loaded walks drawn by sophomore Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine) and first-year Sara Ring (Wells, Maine).

CSJ's Jenna Crowley was credited the win after McKenzie Ebert worked out of an inherited bases-loaded jam and a clean seventh inning. SMCC's Mackenzie suffered her fifth loss of the season.

Game 2: W, 6-4
Mackenzie made her redemption start in the second game logging her team-leading fourth complete game of the season. The righty allowed 14 hits and four runs behind a sound SMCC defense.

CSJ jumped on the board in the first inning but Ring equalized with her third RBI of the day on a knock to right field.

Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, SMCC provided all the offense needed with five runs on five hits to go ahead 6-3. The Fighting Saints would get Mackenzie for one more run in the seventh before first-year Emily Emerson (Topsham, Vt.) made a two-out grab on a line shot to left field to secure the win for the home team. Mackenzie improved to 5-5; CSJ's Shelby Fenton suffered the loss.
