SMCC Bats Quiet In YSCC Twin Bill

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team suffered a sweep in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader to the Lynx from NHTI on Saturday, Apr. 14.

Game 1: L, 14-0 (5 innings)
SMCC employed three pitchers to combine for 5.0 innings. Opposite was Lynx ace Tori Lemay who was near perfect and utilized 10 strikeouts to no-hit the SeaWolves in a complete game shutout. Lemay allowed two base runners by way of a walk to lead off the game and an error by the third baseman in the fourth inning.

The Lynx scored five in their first at-bats capped by a two-run homer by Elizabeth DeVoss. The visitors went on to score three in the third inning and use another three-run blast in the fourth to score six more and finish the game in five.

SMCC starter Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) suffered the loss; Lemay notched her league-leading eighth win of the season.

Game 2: L, 7-6
Coach Ray Magnant turned to sophomore Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) in the second game. Throwing her second complete game of the season, the right-hander allowed seven runs (three earned) and struck out two.

SMCC tagged the NHTI starter Brianna Whitcomb for six runs in the second inning before Lemay picked up where she left off, this time in a relief appearance. The SeaWolves were unable to find their rhythm again before the Lynx evened the game in the fourth inning and went ahead by a run in the sixth.

SMCC's Madison Eastman (South Berwick, Maine) reached on a single to begin the bottom of the seventh but would not advance on a double play and a fly out to end the game.

SMCC slips to 1-3 in conference action, 9-13 overall. NHTI improves to 2-0 YSCC, 15-5 on the season.

The SeaWolves return to the diamond on Tuesday, Apr. 17 when they host Northern Essex Community College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. Can't be in attendance? Follow LIVE STATS.
