Back To .500, Softball Shuts Down Mustangs

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team took both games of a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader vs. Central Maine Community College on Wednesday, Apr. 19.

Game 1: W, 7-1
Sophomore Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) stole the show in the first game throwing seven complete innings and spread out four hits to allow one unearned run. The right-hander recorded strikeout number 45 with eight in the game.

The SeaWolf offense was slow to start, going down in order in each of the first two innings, however came alive in the third sparked by a sacrifice fly by first-year Madison Eastman (South Berwick, Maine) and a two-out two-RBI single by the catcher Sara Ring (Wells, Maine).  

Mackenzie, first-year Cassidy Harriman (Richmond, Maine), and sophomore Amber Randall (Standish, Maine) all got in on the action in the fourth with RBIs of their own. For good measure, the SeaWolves tacked on another in the fifth inning.

The Mustangs pushed across their only run on a fielding error to break up the shutout in the top-half of the sixth inning before Mackenzie notched her team-leading seventh win of the season; CMCC's Olivia York suffered the loss.

Game 2: W, 9-1 (6 innings)
Part-two was commanded by sophomore Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) who struck out a season high 11 batters in another complete game two-hit performance.

SMCC used their first at-bats to provide four runs of support on four hits. Sophomore Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.) helped the home team to another run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning to go up 5-0.

The Lady Mustangs crossed one in the sixth inning courtesy of a RBI knock by York to cut their deficit to five. Not to be outdone, SMCC finished the game by the eight-run rule using a bases-loaded walk by first-year Jaime Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) and a play that would result in two more on a CMCC fielding miscue.

Guimond earned her fifth win of her rookie season; CMCC's Alex Bessey was owed the loss.

The Lady Wolves get back to the .500 mark at 13-13 overall, 3-3 in YSCC play. The Mustangs stand 2-4 in league action.

The action continues from South Portland when SMCC hosts the Community College of Rhode Island for a non-conference double dip on Friday, Apr. 20. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Can't be in attendance? Tune into the LIVE STATS.
