Central Maine Community College repeats as champs

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine- The Central Maine Community College women's basketball team took home a consecutive Yankee Small College Conference championship in dominating fashion, defeating the University of Maine at Augusta 100-48 Sunday afternoon.

The number ranked team in the country in USCAA Division II, CMCC will travel to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships to be held March 6th through the 8th in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

The Mustangs were led by Susie French, who scored a game-high 27 points on 11 for 14 shooting from the floor and took home conference most valuable player honors. Despite the final score, the game remained close early on, with the Moose trailing by only three half-way through the first; but UMA sophomore Arreonte Lee picked up her third foul early, playing only seven minutes in the opening half.

With the Moose top scorer on the bench, CMCC went on a tear, scoring 19 points over the next five minutes, nine of which came from French. From that point, it was all CMCC.

Lexi Larson was also in double-figures for head coach Andrew Morong's team, scoring 17 points; Laura Soohey turned in a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Gabby Foy and Samantha Bruce each scored ten points.

Foy was named outstanding offensive player of the tournament, while UMA freshman Courtney Jicks was named defensive player of the tournament. The Moose were led by Jamie Plummer who scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Arreonte Lee scored 14 and Jennifer Lola scored ten for head coach Jennifer Laney's team.
