SMCC Women Prevail For Another Road Victory

CONCORD, N.H.— The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the Lady Linx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) 61-52 in their fourth Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) contest of the season on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Senior Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) played her way to her third double-double of the season, leading all scorers with 24 points and adding 12 rebounds. Conrad ranks fourth in the conference in points scored having totaled 144 on the season. Co-captain Hannah Heald (Union, Maine) contributed at the post position pouring in 14 to go along with her eight rebounds. Sophomore Alexis Antonacci (Long Island, N.Y.) quarterbacked the offense tallying eight points, four assists, and two steals.

Conrad buried a three-pointer on the SeaWolves' first possession of the game to give SMCC a lead they would never surrender. The SeaWolves outscored their opponent in the first three quarters to take a 51 to 35 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Linx brought the game to within six with three minutes remaining, but SMCC finished the game making five of six from the free-throw line to secure the nine-point victory. The SeaWolves shot 84.6 percent from the charity stripe, knocking down 22 of 26 in the game.

The SeaWolves stay perfect sporting a 4-0 record in conference play, and improving to 9-0 overall.

After the game. Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "Tonight was a great test to our ability to adjust mid-game to things we cannot control. We had players step-up in important times, and despite missing shots we normally make and some calls that didn't go our way, the women responded and we walked away with another road victory. Winning when things are not going your way is a skill and we are continuing to refine it!"

The action continues when the SeaWolves play host to the 4-4 Lady Clippers from the University of Maine at Machias in another YSCC match-up on Saturday, Dec. 3. Tip-off from the HUB Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
