Abdul’s Career Night Lifts SeaWolves

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine-- The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the nationally-ranked #7 Lady Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) 60-55 at the HUB on Tuesday, Jan. 31 in a game designated non-conference.

First-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) had herself a career night in notching her first double-double of the season. The 5'5'' guard scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. First-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) went for 20 points shooting 4-10 from downtown spanning 40 minutes. Sophomore Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) also finished in double figures netting 12.

The SeaWolves outscored the Lady Lynx in each of the first three quarters and held a 16-point advantage, its largest lead of the night, to finish the third. NHTI strung together a 13-0 run early in the fourth to close its deficient to three. SMCC was able to get to the line six times and make five in the final two minutes of regulation to close out the game.

The SeaWolves out-rebounded their opponent by 16 and shot 80 percent from the free-throw line, getting there 20 times in the contest.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron reflected, "We knew tonight was going to be a challenge. We had players step up in big moments and most importantly didn't get down when things weren't going our way. Abdul performed huge for us tonight recording a double—double and it was nice to see Ruth knocking down threes as she routinely does."

The SMCC women grabbed their 20th victory of the season and remain 11-1 in conference play. NHTI falls to 19-7 but still sits atop the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) South Division standings.
