Lady SeaWolves Conquer Knights In Vermont

RANDOLPH, Vt.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team continued its perfect Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) start with a 73-42 victory over the Knights from Vermont Technical College (VTC) on Saturday, Nov. 18.

First-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) lit up the stat sheet in the first quarter with nine points on 4-8 shooting as SMCC piled on 21 points to VTC's four. SMCC limited the Knights to seven points and 11 at the half, the lowest total by any opponent all season.

The SeaWolves went on to outscore the Knights by eight in the third much to do with SMCC's perimeter attack and 4-8 from three-point territory. First-year Emily Emerson (Topsham, Vt.) netted 6 points on 3-3 from the floor to help the SeaWolves to 18 points in the final 10 minutes and a 31-point win.

The SeaWolves capitalized on points off turnovers scoring 35 compared to the opposition's six. Ramirez finished with a rounded performance in 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. Emerson posted a near double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds—matching a season-high six steals. Sophomore co-captain Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) made 4-11 from beyond the arc to total 12 points.

VTC's Mariah Rilling was the game's high scorer with 21 in 34 minutes of action.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron spoke on her team's success on the road. "This was another game where everyone on the team saw good minutes! It was nice to play Vermont and have Emily Emerson and Jordan Farquharson play in front of friends and family who don't normally get to watch them play. Our first-year dynamic duo had another great afternoon!"

SMCC improves to 5-2 overall, 3-0 in conference action; VTC sports a 1-6 overall record, 1-4 YSCC.

The Lady SeaWolves move ahead to the 5-1 Moose of University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) on Tuesday, Nov. 21. UMA will host after defeating NHTI's Concord's Community College on the road by a 19-point margin on Sunday, Nov. 19. Tip-off from the Augusta Civic Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
