Lady Moose Fly by Clippers

AUGUSTA, Maine (UMA) - The University of Maine-Augusta (7-1) women's basketball team extended their winning streak to five games with an 80-50 win over the University of Maine-Machias Clippers (4-4) at the Augusta Civic Center Tuesday night.

The Moose jumped out to a 25-6 first quarter lead due in large part to Dominique Lewis' three-point shooting, pouring in 4-of-7 from behind the arc for 12 points. Lewis would finish the night with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

The Clippers cut into the Moose lead by scoring the first six points of the second quarter and closing to within 13, but that's as close as the Clippers would get the rest of the half with UMA taking a 43-26 lead heading into the locker room.

A sluggish start to the third quarter by the Moose resulted in seven straight points for UMM on the back of the Clippers' senior guard Alicen Brooks and her effort on the glass at both ends of the court.

Brooks converted two free-throw attempts after hauling in an offensive rebound closing the Clippers to within 13 at 7:04 of the third quarter before Moose coach Jennifer Laney called a timeout, effectively ending UMM's momentum while getting her own side back on track.

Caitlin LaFountain, last week's USCAA Women's Basketball Div-II Player of the Week, lead the the Moose out of the time out by crashing the glass and registering a block while drawing fouls in the offensive end. LaFountain finished the night with a double-double recording 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists to go along with 2 blocks and 2 steals.

All five starters for the Moose scored 10 points or more as the team shot 40.7% from three-point range while committing just 5 turnovers the entire game.

UMM out-rebounded the Moose 49-44 but it was the teams 21 turnovers combined with great long-range shooting by UMA that ultimately did the Clippers in Tuesday night.

UMA is back in action Wednesday night at home as they play host to Bunker Hill Community College with tip-off schedule for 6:00 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.
