Perimeter and Paint Play Carry SeaWolves Over Albany

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team improved to 9-3 on the season defeating the Panthers from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences 82-48 in a non-conference game on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Five Lady SeaWolves topped double digit scoring led by junior co-captain Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) with 16 in the contest— scoring 10 or more points in three consecutive games. First-year Amanda Brett(Portland, Maine) put together her first double-double of the season going for 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The sophomore guard tandem of Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine) and Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) combined for six three-pointers and 28 points as first-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) collected 10 assists and Grace Kariotis (New Gloucester, Maine) scored 11 points in 10 minutes of action.

SMCC led for the duration of the game beginning with a made three-pointer by sophomore Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine), the first bucket of the game. SMCC led in three of four quarters and held the Panthers to single digit scoring in both the first and fourth.

It was SMCC's ability to make 12 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc, at a 40 percent clip, that proved to be the difference maker in the game. The Lady SeaWolves got it done both from the perimeter and in the paint, out rebounding their opponent by 23. It was also the third consecutive game that SMCC recorded 23 assists as a team— winners of all three.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron stated, "We have been very focused in practice on staying disciplined and being impactful when we are on the floor. Tonight was a culmination of that—again we saw new freshmen playing big minutes. Amanda Brett was a force in the paint and Grace Kariotis, who didn't play in the first half, subbed in the second and knocked down shots—this type of focus, bench play, and selfless teamwork will take us far! We hope to continue this week!"
