Mustangs Top SeaWolves Despite Brett’s Monster Day

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered its second Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) loss, 69-60 to rival Central Maine Community College (CMCC) at the Hutchinson Union Building on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

The Lady Mustangs finished the first quarter holding a nine-point advantage before SMCC made up the difference beginning the second on a 10-0 run. Sophomore Emily Keene (Livermore Falls, Maine) nailed two three-pointers in consecutive trips down the floor before the half to even the score 31-31.

First-year Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) assembled her biggest quarter of the season with 10 points and seven rebounds in the third to help SMCC keep pace with 17 from the opposition. The Lady SeaWolves trailed by only two heading into the final 10 minutes until CMCC's Kristina Blais (Lewiston, Maine) netted eight on 3-3 shooting, 2-2 from beyond to arc to give her team the separation they would sustain until the final whistle.

Brett finished a career day with 29 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks on 12-23 shooting. Brett helped the Lady SeaWolves to second chance opportunities pulling down nine offensive boards. First-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) collected 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in 32 minutes of work.

Blais led the Mustangs with 23 points on 4-7 from downtown, and six assists.

CMCC remains atop the YSCC standings at a perfect 10-0 mark, 14-1 overall. The SeaWolves sit third in the conference standings at 6-2, 9-4 overall.

SMCC gets back to action in their last bout before the semester break at the Naval Academy Preparatory School on Saturday, Dec. 16. The SeaWolves look to avenge their loss to the Midshipmen earlier this season at a 1 p.m. tip-off.
