SeaWolves Rip Cougars, Advance To Women's National Semifinal Round

UNIONTOWN, Penn.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team took care of the #4-seeded Cougars from the University of Cincinnati Clermont 66-41 in the quarterfinal round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament Monday, Mar. 9.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the early goings, finishing the opening quarter plus-7. SMCC went on to win each of the remaining three quarters to fuel Head Coach Katie Stannard's ninetieth career win.

SMCC limited the opposition to just 17.4 percent from the floor and converted at a 42.4 percent clip on 10 fewer shot attempts.

First-years Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine), Elise Hebert (Arundel, Maine), and junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) all contributed 11 points—Hebert with five blocks and Brett a double-double ripping 10 rebounds. First-year Bailey Whitney (Norway, Maine) finished a career game with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Clermont's Kenzie Harding led her squad with 17 points spanning 37 minutes of play.

This the first time in program history that both the men's and women's teams have won games in the winner's bracket in the same season.

The Lady SeaWolves will get the winner of #1 Penn State University Beaver/#9 Andrews University tomorrow, Tuesday Mar. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. WATCH LIVE or follow the GAME CAST.
