SMCC women's soccer team enters first national championship tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Southern Maine Community College women's soccer team will play in the first United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Tournament next week, when the team travels to Asheville, North Carolina as the number seven seed. The Seawolves received the automatic bid to the tournament by defeating the University of Maine at Machias in a game that came down to penalty kicks. 

SMCC out-shot the Clippers 3-2 on penalty kicks to give them the title. The Seawolves recorded the most successful season in program history, with an overall record of 10-1-2 and a conference mark of 4-1-1. The team was led by midfielder Hannah Fields, who led the team and ranked in the top five in the conference with 12 goals. She was joined in the top ten in the conference top ten by conference player of the year Kym Hendrix and all conference selection Zyrah Giustra, who each scored ten goals on the season.

Machiavelli also earned a trip to the national tournament and are slated to take on Warren Wilson College.

The Seawolves are slated to take on tenth-seeded Carlow University (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in an 11:30 showdown on Wednesday, November 4th. For additional information regarding the nationalr tournament, please visit the USCAA Women's Soccer National Championship website
