Machias advances, SMCC falls first round of women's soccer playoffs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The University of Maine at Machias women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the USCAA Soccer National Championships with a 2-0 victory over ninth seeded Warren Wilson Wednesday afternoon. The Clippers (11-4-4) came in to the tournament as the eighth seed and will take on defending national champions and first seeded University of Maine at Fort Kent on Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m.

The Clippers received a goal from Sierra Tjelmeland eight minutes into the game and then turned the game over to its defense, which successfully thwarted multiple attempts from Warren Wilson College to score an equalizer. Clippers Keeper Aisling Farragher-Gemma tallied four saves in the game, facing a barrage of shots from the Warren Wilson Owls, who outshot University of Maine-Machias 10-3 in the game, including five on goal. Brooklynne Lewis added an insurance goal in the 75th minute to essentially put the game out of reach and ensure the Clippers advancement to the USCAA women's soccer quarterfinals.
