Mustangs Much Improved in a 3-0 Loss to Unity

Auburn, Me- Unity, fresh off a win against UMaine Machias came calling on Central Maine today in a scorcher with 90 degree heat. The Lady Mustangs who continue to improve every time on the field spent this past week focusing on correcting some of the more critical defensive mistakes that were allowing teams to score a lot of goals on them and working on a defensive change that saw them move to a three-back system instead of the normal four. This week's work definitely paid off. In a back and forth game up and down the field, the Mustangs held on 0-0 until about 9 minutes left in the first half when they finally surrendered a goal on a defensive positioning error. That goal held up going into halftime with Unity holding a 1-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw the Mustangs begin to wear down in the heat with only one sub who was used sparingly due to illness but it still took twenty minutes of the second half before Unity would score another goal on Central Maine. The third Unity goal came three minutes later at the midway point of the second half but the Mustangs held it together and played the last 23 minutes of the second half without surrendering a goal and moving the ball up the field to create chances of their own. Freshmen goalkeeper Shantel Camber did an outstanding job in the net coming up with some big saves when needed.

Overall, a big step forward for Central Maine who just needs continued game experience to get familiar with their new playing system. The Mustangs visit Southern Maine Community College in a non-conference game this Sunday at 2 pm.
