Mustang women's soccer advances to 2-0 for 1st time in program history

Brockton, MA (CMCC) - The Central Maine Mustangs spent their Labor Day on the road traveling to Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass to play the Warriors in a non-conference game. Massasoit, one of the fastest teams that the Mustangs will face presented an early problem and jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Amanda Sesoch early in the first half. It took some time for the Mustangs to adjust to the Warriors speed and even when they did, they were outshot in the first half 19-5, but the Mustangs "bend but don't break" defense kept the score to 1-0 Massasoit at the end of the first half.
Second half was a totally different game. The Mustangs switched from a three-back to a four-back system and inverted the center mids to provide more defensive support and dominated play right from the second half opening whistle. Jane Lester replaced Ali Sult in the goal, who came out of the game with a sore knee and shoulder. Early in the second half Megan Duval scored on a pass by Ellie Harrington to tie the game at 1-1. The defensive unit anchored by Keara Hunter with Emily Rubino, Abby Fogg, and Cheyenne Gray shut down the Warrior attack limiting Massasoit to 12 long shots. The additional defensive and midfield support allowed the Mustangs to stay on the attack for most of the half and generated 18 shots from close range on the Warrior keeper in the second half. Regulation time ended with a score of 1-1 and the teams were headed for overtime.
Ninety minutes of fast paced play led to two very tired teams beginning the first overtime period, a ten-minute segment that saw Massasoit regain their momentum, but the Mustang defense held firm keeping the first overtime period scoreless. In the second overtime period, it was an all-out Mustang attack leading to Duval's second goal of the game on a header from the six yard box off a cross by Brittany Greig. Both teams were completely exhausted after a hard fought 105 minute battle.
The Mustangs (2-0) have some time now before they play their home opener in Auburn against rival, Southern Maine Community College, on Wednesday September 13 with a 3:30 pm kickoff.
