Lady SeaWolves Drop Season Opener to Holyoke

Lady SeaWolves Drop Season Opener to Holyoke

HOLYOKE, Mass.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 in its 2017 season opener by the Cougars of Holyoke Community College in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The home team found the back of the net at the two-minute mark and again early out of the halftime whistle as a result of SMCC defensive miscues in the middle of the field. The SeaWolves were able to maintain possession throughout and proved dangerous in the attacking third, but were held scoreless hitting the post four times in the 90 minutes of action. It was a true team effort as all contributed from the bench.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Julia Cyr commented, "Lots of positives to take away from the first game of the season. With many new faces and a new system, you never know what to expect—I was pleased with how well it came together. Offensively it looked promising and we plan to build on the positives moving forward."

SMCC begins its fall campaign 0-1 overall; Holyoke stands 1-1 early into its season.

The Panthers are coming off a trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament a season ago. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
