Mustangs shock UMaine-Machias in season opener

Mustangs shock UMaine-Machias in season opener

Machias, ME (CMCC) - The 2017 Lady Mustangs opened their season on the road against UMaine Machias, always a tough opponent.  The Mustangs have worked hard in preseason to build their defensive unit and that paid off today in their first game of the season.

The Mustangs opened the scoring with a goal by Ellie Harrington (Fareham, Hampshire, UK) off a direct kick to take a 1-0 lead.  Midway through the first half, Meghan Desjardins (Wales, ME) scored off a rebound from the edge of the penalty area to put the Mustangs up 2-0.  Machias got a goal back on a direct kick by Megan Fromwiller to make the score 2-1 Mustangs.  The Clippers evened up the score before the end of the first half and the half ended 2-2.

The second half, saw more of the same, a back and forth game with both teams pressuring each other's goals.   Ali Sult (Lisbon Falls,ME) came up with some big saves to turn away some good Clipper scoring opportunities while the Mustangs had some excellent chances of their own at the Machias net.

The score stayed knotted at 2-2 for a good part of the second half until Harrington got her second goal of the game with a volley over the Clipper defense and goal keepers head into the back of the net for the game winner.  The Mustangs tightened up on defense to close out the game without giving Machias any more good opportunities and came away with the 3-2 win, the first victory over Machias in program history.

The season continues with their 2nd road game in 3 days, when the Mustangs travel to Brockton, MA to take on Massasoit CC on Monday.
