Mustang women earn crucial bounce back win over Hampshire

AUBURN, Maine (CMCC) -- The Central Maine Lady Mustangs rebounded from a tough loss to SMCC earlier in the week by earning a very important conference win against Hampshire College of Amherst, MA in the first ever meeting between the two teams.  This evenly played game turned out to be an endurance test for both teams in the extreme heat.    

With both teams moving the ball well up and down the field, the game remained scoreless until the 39th minute when Megan Duval netted a ball on a feed from Brittany Greig to put the Mustangs up 1-0.  The Mustang defense held tight and the teams entered halftime with Central Maine ahead 1-0.   

The second half saw more of the same but fifteen minutes into the half, this time it was Greig scoring her first collegiate goal at close range off a pass from Duval.  Hampshire would then gain a goal back about a minute and half later on a shot by Jenna Fontanetta, assisted by Natalie Strohm.  That would be the end of the scoring in spite of some excellent opportunities by both teams.  The Mustang defense, switching from a three-back to four-back system to close out the game held tight to give them the win.   

Ali Sult made 19 saves to earn the win for the Mustangs, Lea Sweeney turned back 18 of 20 shots for Hampshire College.   

The Lady Mustangs, now 3-1 overall & 2-1 in the YSCC hit the road for their next two games, Wednesday, September 20 at Unity College and then a Friday contest in Concord, NH against  NHTI.
