Lady SeaWolves Drop First YSCC Match In 2-1 Thriller

CONCORD, N.H.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team suffered its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) defeat of the season to the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) 2-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

In a battle of the YSCC undefeated, this game was nothing short of what was advertised. Locked in a stalemate through the first 45 minutes, NHTI's Piper Cote scored on a ball from the conference assist leader Sydney Clark at the 58:07 mark.

The Lady SeaWolves were able to get behind the Lynx defense before sophomore Samantha Munson (South Portland, Maine) finished a bouncing ball off the keeper to notch her second goal of the season, and the equalizer for the road team in the 66th minute.

NHTI's Danielle Ross tallied her league-leading 14th point of the season and what would be the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The Lady SeaWolves landed one more shot on goal, but to no avail, before falling 3-1 in YSCC-play, 3-3 overall. SMCC's goalkeeper Shae Couture (Rochester, N.H.) made six saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Lynx claim the top spot in the conference standings improving to 4-0-1, 5-0-1 overall.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Julia Cyr commented, "When these two teams get together its always competitive. We should relentlessness in battling from behind and playing with more urgency then we have all season— looking forward to seeing NHTI again in the post-season."

The action continues when SMCC plays host to Hampshire College on Saturday, Sept. 23. In their previous three meetings, the Lady SeaWolves are 1-0-2 against the Black Sheep. Kickoff at Wainwright Recreation Complex is set for 1 p.m.
