Baseball Takes Sting Out of Concordia With Pair of Wins

Montreal, QC – The Central Maine Community College baseball team started off its weekend tour of Canada with a pair of wins over the Concordia University Stingers on Friday evening. The Mustangs came from behind in game one to steal a 12-11 win before sweeping the doubleheader with a 5-2 victory in game two.
Game One, 12-11 W
Five CMCC players recorded multi-hit outings in game one of the doubleheader. Levi Tibbetts went 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Garren Post drove in three runs himself. Jake Calver had a 3-for-5 day with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored.
Both teams scored four runs in the first inning to set the tone for a high scoring back-and-forth game. The Mustangs took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the third, only to see Concordia have a big inning bringing 13 batters to the plate with the help of several CMCC errors. Jeff Meisner came on in relief of starter Brady Vincent to end the inning but not before the Stingers had scored six times to take a 10-7 lead.
Tibbetts smacked a two-run home run in the fourth to cut the deficit to one before Ben Powell scored in the bottom of the fifth for Concordia.
Down to their last three outs, the Mustangs went to work on reliever Adrian Cookson who came on for the save. Lee Robertson and Brandon Gour drew lead-off walks before Cookson settled down, striking out Ryan Stone and forcing a ground out from Post. The Stingers decided to intentionally walk Tibbetts leaving the bases loaded for Hayden Durrell. The sophomore from Mt. Blue High School stepped up when his team needed him, and his fly ball into right field brought home all three runners to give CMCC a 12-11 lead.
Concordia tried to respond in kind, getting their first two runners on base in their final at bats. But Cameron Dostie picked off Powell trying to steal before a ground out and strikeout for Meisner ended the game.
Game Two, 5-2 W
Levi Tibbetts pitched six strong innings to help CMCC take game two of the doubleheader, 5-2. The sophomore from Lisbon Falls, ME struck out 11 batters while allowing just three hits and one run.
After the fireworks in game one, both teams went scoreless through the first two innings before the Mustangs broke through in the third. Ryan Stone drove in Brandon Gour before scoring himself on a passed ball. Brendan Mahaney singled into left field to bring home Garren Post for a 3-0 lead.
Tibbetts did struggle a bit in the fourth with an error and three walks, plating a run for the Stingers. But a ground ball down the first base line was thrown home for a force out by Brendan Mahaney before Cameron Dostie sent it back to the bag for an inning-ending double play.
CMCC would add two more runs in the later innings. Lee Robertson beat out a ground ball to short on a throwing error to drive in Jake Calver in the sixth, and Hayden Durrell hit a ground ball through the gap to right in the seventh that brought home Shane Jewett.
Fischer Cormier then came on for the save. The pitcher from Mountain Valley High School did allow a run after a triple by Alex Ramsay and sac-fly by Ben Powell. He would settle down though and ended the game with a strike out to give CMCC the perfect start to its fall trip to Montreal.
The Mustangs stay in the city to face more Canadian opposition on Saturday, taking on McGill University in a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
