SMCC Women First To Reach Eight YSCC Wins

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine--  The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the Lady Bobcats of Paul Smith's College in its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) game back from the semester break 53-12 at the HUB on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

All 10 players with minutes in the game made it into the score book. Sophomore Emily Keene (Livermore Falls, Maine) tied her season-high point total with 11, also adding eight rebounds and two assists. First-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) made it her third consecutive game scoring in double-digits with 11 points, nine from beyond the arc. First-year Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine) grabbed a season-high 12 boards as the team collected 58 in total.

Entering play, the SeaWolves ranked first among YSCC teams allowing the fewest points per game to opponents. SMCC allowed a season-low four points to the Bobcats in the first half, and just 12 in total forcing the opposition into 32 turnovers.

Head Coach Katie Bergeron reflected, "Tonight was another instance where we saw contributions from everyone on both ends of the floor. Players got it done in new ways—Hogan finished with 12 rebounds, Keene with eight, and Farquharson with four steals. It was nice to be back on our home court and look forward to our next challenge in St. Joseph's on Saturday."

The SeaWolves are the first YSCC team to reach eight conference wins and remain just a game behind undefeated Central Maine Community College in the North Division standings. The SMCC women sport a 15-1 record overall.
