SMCC Women Erupt For 80 Points In Road Win

PORTSMOUTH, N.H.--  The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team surged to its four consecutive win defeating the Lady Herons of Great Bay Community College 80-32 in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

First-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) led the way for the SeaWolves netting 20 points and tallying four assists and four steals. Co-captains Vanese Barnes (Jay, Maine) and Hannah Heald (Union, Maine) both scored in double-digits with 10 apiece; first-year Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine) and senior Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) both posted nine points in the team's winning effort.

The SeaWolves held their opponent to 16 points in each half and erupted for 80 points, an offensive feat they've accomplished just four times this season. As a team, SMCC shot 44 percent from the floor and assisted on 23 of 36 baskets.

The SeaWolves continue to play hard-nose defense forcing the opposition into 33 turnovers and 21 percent shooting. Defense leads to offense and SMCC capitalized on 29 points off turnovers.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron stated, "Our outside shots weren't falling early on, however we're beginning to realize when we're not hitting from the perimeter to attack the basket and push in transition. We made great decisions with the ball tonight and had balanced scoring from all. No matter what combination was on the floor, our team attacked and finished when we had numbers, and slowed the game down and executed our offense when it was appropriate. Tonight we were led by first-year point guard Abdul, and our captains Heald and Barnes."

The SMCC women remain 9-1 in conference play, and improve to 17-1 overall.

The action continues when the SeaWolves travel to the University of Maine at Machias to take on a Lady Clippers team that is 6-2 in conference play and winners of two in a row. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
