Lady SeaWolves Get Back On Track With Win In Phily

Philadelphia, Penn.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team put an end to its two-game skid and brought home victory at first-time opponent Community College of Philadelphia 83-53 on Sunday, Dec. 15.

It was a seven-point game at the half in favor of the SeaWolves who broke it open in the third with a 27-point quarter. SMCC outscored the home team again by double figures in the fourth to skate to a 30-point victory.

First-year Grace Fontaine (Auburn, Maine) used five triples to fill up the scoresheet with a season-high 22 points. Junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) matched the same total—her fifth game going for 20 or more. First-year Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) reached double digits with 14 for the sixth time in her rookie campaign, and first-year Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) came off the bench to contribute 9 points in 24 minutes on the floor.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, "Winning the way we did today changed our morale going into the semester break. Without seeing this team before, we weathered a tight first half and came out in the second with our best brand of basketball. Grace stepped up in a big way today and produced offensively like she is capable. I look forward to coming back from break refreshed, refocused, and ready to make the next jump."

The result begins a new win streak for SMCC, now sporting an 11-2 record on the season.

The conference home game scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 18 will result in a forfeit by Paul Smith's College—the SeaWolves get back to action after the break with a non-conference home game against the Knights from the Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tip-off at the HUB is scheduled for 1 p.m. WATCH on Facebook LIVE or follow the GAME CAST.
