CMCC Women’s Soccer Falls Just Short At Thomas
Waterville, ME – The Central Maine women's soccer team suffered a narrow loss on the road to NCAA Division III opponent Thomas College on Friday night in Waterville. First year forward Olivia Varney scored in her second straight game for the Mustangs in the loss.
The first half was a tale of early and late goals. Thomas got on the board just under four minutes in with a low cross into the box wreaking havoc.
Captain Madisyn Turcotte was able to get a foot to it but her clearance was blocked. Mary LaRochelle took advantage for the Terriers. The senior from Woolwich, ME got her left foot to the ball inside the six-yard box and scrambled it past Emma Knowles to make it 1-0 Thomas.
But with just under four minutes to go in the half, it was the Mustangs turn to strike back. Lily Caban was able to slip a pass between two Terriers defenders and into the path of Olivia Varney. The freshman out of the Maine Central Institute delivered a left-footed strike that glanced off the fingertips of goalkeeper Emily Rock and into the back of the net.
With a 1-1 score at halftime, both teams went in search of a winner as the sun set and the lights came on. Thomas slowly started to turn momentum back in their favor, but looked like they may have to settle for a draw. However, with about five minutes remaining in the match, their chance arrived. Larochelle netted her second of the game with a shot to the top left corner past substitute goalkeeper Ava Simpson.
That proved to be the difference as Thomas saw out the remaining minutes for a 2-1 win. The Terriers edged the Mustangs in shots on goal 11-5, including a 7-1 margin in the second half as they peppered the Central Maine net.
CMCC continues its stint of four games away from home when the calendar flips to September. The Mustangs take on Vermont State University-Johnson on September 7th followed by a rematch with Husson University on September 13th.
