Varney Scores, Adds Three Assists in Win at UMA

Augusta, ME – The CMCC women's soccer team completed a season sweep of the UMaine-Augusta Moose with a 5-1 win on the road Monday night. Olivia Varney scored the equalizer and had three assists for the Mustangs, while leading scorer Destiny Mooers bagged her third brace of the campaign.
With rainy, windy conditions the match was moved across town, over the Kennebec River to Cony High School's artificial turf field.
UMA jumped out to the early lead in the 13th minute. Nicole Reeves found Skyla Dean in the middle of the field. She sent a long ball forward for Gabby Allen to run onto. The senior forward uncorked a shot from the top of the box that went off the fingertips of Emma Knowles and just under the crossbar.
The Mustangs responded in the 19th minute from a set piece. Olivia Varney stepped into a free kick from 29 yards out. Her shot dipped in front of goalkeeper Vanessa Wharton and skipped past her on the wet turf and into the back of the net. It was the sixth goal of the season for the freshman out of the Maine Central Institute, and briefly moved Varney into a tie for the team lead in goals.
Captain Katie Blouin put CMCC on top for good seven minutes later. Varney sent a corner kick into the area that Destiny Mooers struck on the volley. Her shot bounced high on the turf and allowed Blouin to get her head on it and nod the ball down into the net for a 2-1 lead. It was the Greene, ME native's first of the season.
With three minutes to go before halftime, Mooers put herself back on top of the team scoring charts. The first-year forward from Hampden Academy picked up the ball on the left sideline, shook off a defender, and floated a high shot over the head of Wharton and under the crossbar for a 3-1 Mustangs lead.
She added her eighth goal of the season shortly after the restart in the 52nd minute. Varney again served a corner kick into the box that Mooers met first. This time though the forward knocked the ball down to herself before placing a low shot into the back of the net.
That 4-1 lead left Central Maine comfortable to control the tempo of the match. Wharton made several fine saves to keep her team close, including a pair of back-to-back stops on Mya Sirois and Varney. The Mustangs eventually broke through for a fifth tally in the 80th minute.
Varney fired a throw-in into the mixer. Freshman Alicia Bergeron struck the bouncing ball on the volley, directing her shot just inside the near post. It was the first collegiate goal for the midfielder out of Leavitt Area High School and put the icing on the cake for CMCC in a 5-1 win.
The Mustangs remain perfect on the season in conference play with a 3-0 YSCC record. The team continues its five-game road trip to end the regular season when it heads to New York to face the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Friday, October 11th.
