SeaWolves March To Fourth YSCC Victory

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team took down the Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias 81-77 on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Hutchinson Union Building in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) North divisional clash.

The SeaWolves spread the work and were able to get five in double figures. First-year Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points. He added four offensive rebounds, shot an efficient 67 percent from the floor, and made five of six at the free-throw line. Captain John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) recorded his second double-double of the season in 32 minutes of work with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Dylan Silvestri (Pelham, N.H.) contributed 17 points as the team's sixth man off the bench.

In a game that featured 12 lead changes, SMCC held a slight two-point advantage with 5:45 remaining. The Morgan and Lobor combo delivered a 7-0 run to create the separation that enabled SMCC to use the clock to its advantage. Lobor would knock down two free-throws with 30 seconds left to eventually close the door on another YSCC victory.

In a win that was much to do about game management, Lobor explained the value of high basketball IQ, "It's important to be athletic and get out in transition, but in time of need you need the high IQ to execute for the score."

In a post-game interview, Morgan described the importance of this win. "We went down to NHTI on Thursday and we really didn't play the way we were supposed to […] today's win was important because we brought our identity back."

SMCC improves to 4-1 in conference play keeping hold of the second spot in the North Division, just a game back of Central Maine Community College.

The SeaWolves will welcome the 3-7 Herons of Great Bay Community College to the HUB on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in another YSCC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
