Blouin’s Late Goal Rescues Draw With SMCC

South Portland, ME – Captain Katie Blouin scored with five minutes left to salvage a tie on the road against rivals Southern Maine Community College Wednesday afternoon, 2-2. It was the second of the year for the junior forward and keeps the Mustangs tied for first in YSCC play heading into their regular season finale.

After a 1-0 win at home earlier in the season, CMCC is now unbeaten against SMCC in its last four meetings, with a 4-1-2 record against the Seawolves since 2022.

Central Maine took the lead in the 25th minute when Destiny Mooers got on the score sheet. Madi Turcotte fed a ball down the left side for the freshman to run onto. She dribbled around one defender in the box and Grayson Soldati slid out to try and claim it. However, the ball caromed away from the SMCC goalkeeper allowing Mooers to chip it over her and into the back of the net. It was the tenth of the season for the first-year from Hampden, ME.

The Seawolves did have chances to equalize, taking seven shots through the first 45 minutes. The hosts found the tying goal with five minutes left in the half. A long ball into the box put Jocelyn Civiello one-on-one against Heather Nelson. The CMCC defender poked the ball away but only as far as Jordyn Hulsey. The SMCC captain smacked a left footed shot from the top of the box past a diving Emma Knowles, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

In the second half, a giveaway off a throw-in put Southern Maine out in front. Hulsey again was the provider cutting in from the right side towards the penalty spot and placing her shot off the far post and in for a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute.

Staring down the barrel of their first defeat in conference action, the Mustangs went to work over the last 27 minutes. The squad took six shots over that span drawing three saves from Soldati. The full throttle offense did leave holes at the back. Hulsey nearly put the game away in the 71st minute with only the crossbar denying her a hat trick effort.

Central Maine also forced six corner kicks in their push to tie things up. It was the last one of those that led to the equalizer.

Lily Caban sent a ball into the mixer that went off the fingertips of Soldati, leading to a scrum in the box. Mooers' effort from point blank range deflected straight back before Blouin arrived to lift the ball into the roof of the net.

The 2-2 draw moves the Mustangs to 5-0-1 in Yankee Small College Conference play and sets up a winner-takes-all showdown at NHTI on Monday, October 21st. The Lynx also have an identical conference record meaning the winner of that match would be the #1 seed going into the YSCC Tournament.
